Surgeon
Surgeon (British Murder Boys, Counterbalance, Warp - UK)

Since exploding onto the techno scene in 1995, with the now-classic 'Surgeon EP', DJ and producer Anthony Child has been remoulding his area of contemporary techno. His early releases on Downwards caused a ripple of excitement through the techno cognoscenti of the time, leading to more widespread exposure via remix work for Dave Clarke and inclusion on Jeff Mills seminal 'Live At the Liquid Rooms CD' Further output on Downwards, such as the 'Pet 2000 EP' (containing the familiar growl of 'Badger Bite'), along with releases by label mates Regis, Female and Portion Reform, helped to place Birmingham boldly on the techno map.

However, these early works, for all of their raw energy and their unusual harsh, funky edge were merely hinting at what was to come. Surgeon's more esoteric influences began to manifest themselves on his first Tresor album release 'Basictonalvocabulary', a record which contained a depth of musicality, without sacrificing any of the edge of earlier works.
This idea of balance between the dancefloor and more cerebral influences was to become a recurring theme in future releases, through the 'Balance' album for Tresor and, later, Surgeon's own Dynamic Tension and Counterbalance label releases. This became increasingly evident as Tony's ability to incorporate the more left field aspects of his musical background into his club-based material developed. Tape based experiments from 1984, which can be heard on the 'Boys, School Showers and Swimming Pools' release on Downwards, show a pre-Surgeon fascination with experimentation and the diverse influences of Industrial music and Musique Concrete became more apparent in each Surgeon release.

Evidence of a new, darker direction began to show through on the 'Force and Form' and 'Body Request' albums, but came to the forefront on the more recent Counterbalance releases. It was becoming obvious that Surgeon's output was more heavily influenced by Coil and Brett Easton Ellis than by Jeff Mills or Underground Resistance.

Throughout this development, Surgeon's production skills have steadily grown. On the Counterbalance releases and the recent 'British Murder Boys' split project with Regis on Downwards, complex poly-rhythms battle with grumbling sub-bass and oblique musical references, causing devastation on club dance floors, while always equally providing a rewarding listening experience. Further evidence of these multi-functional production skills can be seen on Surgeon's impressive remix C.V. Alongside remixes for techno luminaries such as Dave Clarke, the Advent, Rue East and Luke Slater, he has produced reworks for Glasgow post-rock outfit Mogwai (moulding their Fear Satan track into a droning Boyd Rice-like crescendo which takes the original to its logical conclusion) and old masters Faust and Coil.

As a compliment to his production work, Surgeon is also an in-demand DJ, with a busy work schedule spread across Europe, U.S.A and Japan. He has been a resident at House of God in Birmingham since 1993 and also held a three year residency at Berlin's famous Tresor club.
Seven years on from the initial impact of the thumping introduction of 'Magneze', Surgeon continues to use techno as a vehicle to carry his artistic message. Oblivious to current trends (although often helping to set them), his work continues to be deep and expressive but still carries through in a club environment. A perfect dynamic tension; balance and counterbalance; screw the roses.

Pub & Pliiant live
Pub & Pliiant live (Ampoule, Delsin, Vertical Form, Pliiant - UK)

Well known for integrating any particular style or sound, Pub provides the melodies for the dissonant, percussive clutter created by Pliiant. On their only EP together, released on Ampoule, they reshaped the formulaic structures of electronica and experimental hip hop to set these genres back on track towards freestyle variation and improvisation. This show at Katakomben will be the first time these two exceptional musicians appear together on stage - not to be missed!

Rony & Suzy live (lmalc, broqué, ex-nihilo - BE)

They are two brothers from the far east belgium. Loving music since ever, they have played in different indie rock bands like « Thanx to Lilian » or « Post Adrenaline ». Unfortunately the bands have splitten, but they have continued to experiment the world of sounds with drums, guitars, casio keyboards, old cheap recorders, food cans, etc… when their ears began to get used to electronic music they decided to get a synthesizer and a computer. Soul and chips, or if you prefer, Rony’n’Suzy were born!
Since then and thanks to several persons/organizations they had the opportunity to play in different places along with other amazing artists…

Immer.Chic
Immer.Chic (Altered Moods, Polyfon - GER )

Immer.Chic was founded in 1999 by Julian Jöckel and Gregory Schuchmann in order to live out their passion for music. Both are heavily influenced in terms of musical taste by their older brothers who grew up when the first waves of Techno- and House-Music hit Germany. immer.Chic is a very playful project. This means that Gregory and Julian have no absolute notion of the music before they start to produce it. For them it is more important to catch a certain moment or to seek after an atmosphere with their music.
In addition Gregory and Julian try to stay flexible so that they don´t get stuck in one musical direction or style.

Morthen Kiang
Morthen Kiang (meakusma - BE)

Morthen Kiang was born in the year 1982 (supposedly on the sounds of New Order's "Blue Monday") and grew up in Maldegem, a quiet village in the north-west of Belgium (known for its cult scene).
From 2000 on he has been playing records, inspired by the deeper and more soulful side of techno and house. Between 2000 and 2006 he mainly focused on collecting vinyl, sometimes flying to London for buying rare original pressings of classic tunes at the Reckless or MVE stores in the Soho district.
His passion for this classic sound resulted in a double performance on the "Switch" show on the national radio station Studio Brussel in 2007 where two of his classics mixes were broadcasted.
In the same year he regained his interest in todays electronic music and moved his focus from collecting records to performing, inspired by his biggest dj influences Ron Hardy (R.I.P.) and Derrick May. With an updated playlist, combining the best of the present with landmark dance tracks of the past, he performed on various events.
In the beginning of 2008 he launched the ?Feel This Funk? mix series. The aim of these series is blending energetic, deep and inspirational dance music. Putting the soul back in the music! No trends, no hypes. The sets are distributed via the web and on CD-r in small quantities.
